A beginner-friendly guide to the Four Pillars, the Heavenly Stems & Earthly Branches, and how BaZi supports self-understanding.
BaZi (八字, "Eight Characters") is the Chinese birth chart system, part of the broader tradition of Chinese cosmology. It maps the exact moment of your birth into Four Pillars — Year, Month, Day and Hour — each carrying a Heavenly Stem and an Earthly Branch.
Because each pillar has two characters, a full chart has eight characters — hence "BaZi". These eight characters reveal your Five Elements balance and the flow of energy through your life.
Each pillar represents a dimension of your nature:
• Year Pillar — early influences, family and the wider environment.
• Month Pillar — the climate of your life and your active phase.
• Day Pillar — your core self, the heart of the chart.
• Hour Pillar — your later years and deepest expression.
Ten Heavenly Stems (天干): Jia 甲, Yi 乙, Bing 丙, Ding 丁, Wu 戊, Ji 己, Geng 庚, Xin 辛, Ren 壬, Gui 癸 — each maps to one of the Five Elements (with a yin/yang distinction).
Twelve Earthly Branches (地支): Zi, Chou, Yin, Mao, Chen, Si, Wu, Wei, Shen, You, Xu, Hai — these also carry elements and connect to the twelve zodiac animals.
BaZi shows your natural element balance — which elements are strong, which are weak, and how they interact across years. This is a cultural lens for reflection: understanding your tendencies, your rhythms across seasons, and the life phases (大运) that shape each decade.
Used this way, BaZi is a tool for self-exploration and cultural education — not a promise of fate.
